The Secret Cylon Menace of Battlestar Galactica

Posted by admin on 09 Aug 2011 under Uncategorized

The Cylons threatening the remnants of humanity is not a secret in either incarnation of Glen A. Larson’s or Roger Moore’s Battlestar Galactica. Ronald Moore added a new dimension to the Cylons. In Moore’s re-imagined universe, humans could be sleeper agents. Throughout the series, characters who are part of the Galactica crew reveal that they are really the enemy. Colonel Tigh was the highest ranking member of the crew to reveal that he is not human.

The secret menace means that many of the crew members of the Galactica are often forced to second guess their actions and the actions of those around them. Accusing someone of being a Cylon has devastating consequences. More than one plot line deals with the fallout of someone sowing such a suspicion. Usually the people who end up getting accused are not the ones who actually are double agents. Gaius Baltar is the only exception to this rule.

The secret enemy in Moore’s universe reflects the internal enemy all of civilization faces. The show was designed to be a statement on the War on Terror as much as it was designed to be a retelling of the original Glen A. Larson series. Moore’s series does end with the fleet finding Earth while Larson’s does not.
